GWM’s Powerful New 3.0-Litre Diesel Is Coming, and South African 4×4 Owners Should Be Paying Attention
A newly announced four-cylinder turbodiesel promises V6-rivalling performance for the GWM P500 and Tank 500, with a South African launch expected between July and September 2026.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) has confirmed the development of a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 170kW of power and 620Nm of torque, positioning the brand directly alongside the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Volkswagen Amarok in South Africa’s fiercely competitive bakkie and 4×4 market.
Announced at the Beijing Motor Show, the new engine replaces the previously planned 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel unit and follows a layout similar to the Isuzu D-Max, pairing significant displacement with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
For context, the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok share a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel producing 184kW and 600Nm. Toyota’s flagship 2.8-litre GD-6 produces 165kW and 550Nm. GWM’s new four-cylinder sits between these two benchmarks on power, but surpasses both on torque.
What Changes for the GWM Lineup
The new 3.0-litre unit will sit above the 135kW/480Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel currently available in the P300, P500, and Tank 500. In the P-Series, it arrives as an alternative to the 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid, which appears likely to be discontinued for the local market. In the Tank 500, the 3.0-litre diesel will provide a second powertrain option alongside the existing 255kW/648Nm 2.0-litre hybrid.
The 3.0-litre engine will not be available with the Tank 300. That model will instead receive a plug-in hybrid option under the Hi-4T banner, producing a substantial 300kW and 750Nm, placing it in direct competition with the Ford Ranger Raptor.
South African Launch Timeline
GWM South Africa had initially planned the new engine’s introduction for 2027 before fast-tracking the timeline earlier this year. Based on the international rollout schedule, a local announcement is expected between July and September 2026. GWM South Africa has not yet made an official statement on the exact date.
What This Means for GWM Owners and Enthusiasts
For existing GWM Tank 500 and P-Series owners, the arrival of a higher-output diesel represents a significant step forward for the brand’s position in South Africa.
It also signals a growing ecosystem of GWM vehicles for which quality aftermarket accessories and upgrade solutions will become increasingly relevant as the local fleet grows.
